Paper Installation
[ Description ]
My work is to acknowledge the weight of medication. How can something as light as a paper feel heavy? Medication is consumed to lead a functioning life, or to prolong life. The physicality of the pill in itself is unnoticeable, yet, it’s capable of creating changes in your being. It holds a heavy presence.
Starting off with feelings of loss, paranoia, confusion and chaos, the papers hold hesitation and fear. There’s uncertainty which lies in medication. The unanswered parts of medicine, the acceptance to ambiguity of medicine, the change that lies ahead.
The hesitation turns into something. An outcome, a soothing sensation. This coexistence of papers reflects a certain balance within its asymmetry; a feeling of calmness within fear. It’s hope within its daunting presence. But, it still is heavy.
Working with crumples and folds, geometric and organic shapes, curved cuts, intricate carvings on paper, connecting and layering: I have tried to create depth, scatter of focus to play with opacity, light and shadow, diversion from the singular pill to the feeling of it, and most of all: weight in the overall work. This was a delicate yet consuming piece to work on. Much like the theme itself.
